"I am pleased to hear about the Holocaust Committee's
concentrated efforts on educating the young about the
Holocaust. Only people who are informed about what
happened and how it came about can effectively fight a
re-occurrence."
Simon
Wiesenthal
The main objective of the Holocaust Memorial Committee
today is to educate the public, especially the youth of
our communities, in the lessons to be learned from the
Holocaust so that no one will forget and it will never
happen again.
The Committee established a Holocaust Library which is
located in the Long Beach Public Library in Long Beach,
New York. The library contains a permanent collection of
books, videos and other material relating to the
Holocaust. In addition, the Committee regularly sponsors
educational programs at schools throughout Long Island.
Recently, the Committee has sponsored Holocaust Awareness
Day programs at high schools in Long Beach, East Meadow,
Port Jefferson, Seaford and Oceanside. Two of our
Committee members regularly speak about the Holocaust at
public schools, universities and teacher's conventions
throughout the tri-state area and have been involved in
several programs specifically honoring righteous Italians
who protected or saved individuals from persecution during
the Holocaust. This led to the creation of a Holocaust
Memorial Committee by the Commission for Social
Justice/Order Sons of Italy in America.
The Committee also recently sponsored the Anne
Frank Story Exhibit which was on display at the Long Beach
Public Library for over four weeks. The Committee invited
over 100 Long Island schools to visit the exhibit on loan
from Anne Frank Center USA and over 3,000 students and
adults viewed the exhibit during its' very successful
showing in Long Beach. The Committee also holds an annual Kristallnacht
Commemoration in remembrance of
the beginning of the Holocaust. This event, attended by
hundreds, includes speeches by public officials as well as
well known guest speakers, all offering insight into the
root causes of the Holocaust.
The Committee will continue to develop and offer
educational programs to Long Island students with the hope
that each and every student who is touched by one of our
programs obtains a better understanding of the Holocaust
and the ultimate dangers of prejudice in today's society.
